Hello and welcome to Tameside 60 Second News, I’m Elainna Wickens.

Transport Minister Rosie Winderton visited greater Manchester this week to announce the government's backing to a £3 billion bid to relieve congestion in the area. Tameside Council has backed the scheme which will bring a new Metrolink extension to Ashton.

A number 211 bus – once viewed as a lifeline for Hattersley people - has taken hundreds of residents back in time today.

It's part of the Mancunian Reunion, a unique exhibition which tells the story of the Hattersley community – and their journey from 1960s Manchester to the present day.

"Sat Nav" is no longer JUST for lost car drivers. Now pupils from Fairfield High school for Girls are using the software technology to enhance their geography lessons to create trails, follow routes and navigate return journeys.

Tameside's A to Z is out next week. The 32 page booklet gives details of services for families, businesses, and communities as well as information on learning and health. It will be delivered to every home in the borough.

Two Olympics Games hopefuls are joining school children in an Olympic torch relay this week.

Pupils from The Heys Primary and Rosehill Methodist Primary Schools are taking part in the relay to highlight the benefits of walking. It's part of Tameside Council's WOW or Walk Once a Week Campaign.

And finally, singing sensation Alexander O'Neil will be appearing on every doorstep this month. He's on the front page of One Tameside, a new magazine promoting culture across the borough. The star is appearing at the Splendid Weekend Festival in July.

That's all for now, see you next week.
