Tameside's Museum of the Manchester Regiment has just won a special award.

The Museum was 'Highly Commended' at this year's 'Marketing Manchester' Tourism Awards. The Museum of the Manchester Regiment and Setantii: Tales of Tameside were nominated in the 2008 'Small Visitor Attraction of the Year' category.

Legendary basketball team the Harlem Globetrotters made a special trip to a Tameside school this week. Five of the Globetrotters met up with the children and showed off their basketball skills during the hour-long visit. Inspirational.

Protected species of trees and shrubs will be getting special attention in the next few months. Ecology experts will be walking the proposed Metrolink route between Piccadilly and Droylsden. They’ll be carrying out a survey, arranged by Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive, which will include cataloguing the trees and shrubs that may need to be replaced along the line.

And still on plants: if you see people taking a special interest in flowers across the borough they could be inspectors. Judges from Britain in Bloom are to make a surprise visit to the borough to see if Tameside really is blooming marvellous. If you see them, give them a wave.

Tameside roads are dug up far too many times. That¹s the view of the Council and they¹re launching a campaign to do something about it.

The borough’s councillors say there are too many companies digging up the roads and they want the government to give councils the power to cut down the number of times roads are dug up. Plans for the campaign, which has cross party support will be developed in the coming weeks.

That’s all for this week.
