Hello and welcome to Tameside 60 Second News, I’m Beverley Brooks.

More children are getting a better start in life thanks to two new Tameside children’s centres that have been opened this week. The centres, in Fairfield and Micklehurst offer children aged up to 5 and their families early education, childcare, health services, and parenting support.

Two Paralympic World cycling champions set out to inspire local pupils to get on their bikes this week. Gold medal winners Jon Norfolk and Anthony Kappes joined youngsters at Dowson Primary in Hyde as part of their Health Activity Week. More than 100 pupils took up the challenge and brought their bikes into school and proved that pedal power is alive and well.

Stamford Park is set for a major facelift. The National Lottery has backed plans to transform the park with a grant of £203,500. The Council will use the money to develop a scheme worth £6million to transform this much-loved park.

A new housing project that helps people with learning disabilities live more independently received a visit from Cabinet Minister Phil Hope MP yesterday. Beaumont Place, run by the council and New Charter, has 25 apartments for adults with learning disabilities.

A new campaign to highlight activities and clubs that young people can get involved in is to be launched across the borough. At this weeks annual meeting of the council the Executive Leader, Councillor Roy Oldham announced that well over 500 activities have already been identified giving young people plenty to do.

And finally, Ridge Hill Primary School celebrated its half century by creating a giant number fifty made up entirely of pupils – and a helicopter took to the sky to photograph them. A high flying school indeed.

That’s all for now, see you next week
