Hello and welcome to 60 Second News, I'm Karen Moth.
Free parking is to be rolled out across council car parks after 3pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from the beginning of April. It’s hoped the initiative will attract people into shops at times when trade tends to slacken. It forms part of the £12m Tameside Works First scheme to help boost the local economy.
Past and present pupils from the borough’s secondary schools are gathering at Dukinfield Town Hall next week for the first ever Schools for the Future Student Awards. Schools have been asked to nominate outstanding students for the event, which is being sponsored by Tameside's partners in the Building Schools For the Future programme.
Readers of all ages will be able to celebrate their own favourite characters and storytellers while taking part in free activities at a special Reading Heroes event to take place at Ashton Town Hall on Saturday 28th March from 11am to 3pm. The day has been organised to conclude the National Year of Reading - which saw record numbers of people visit and join Tameside libraries. It will also launch the new Reading for Life programme, aimed at encouraging a life-long love of reading.
And finally, tickets are selling fast for Tameside Music Festival, which will involve a series of affordable, local concerts designed at opening up classical music to a whole new audience. For further information please visit Tameside Music Festival or call 0161 342 4144.
That's all for now, see you next week.
