Hello and welcome to Tameside 60 Second News, I'm Karen Moth.
The borough's brightest young stars will be in the spotlight this week at the annual Tameside Achievement Awards.
All schools have been invited to nominate two pupils who have shown outstanding achievement in various aspects of their school and personal life to attend the event.
More than 150 children and young people will be presented with a certificate by the Civic Mayor, Councillor Jack Davis.
The school run could soon be a thing of the past for families at Dowson Primary.
The Hyde school has introduced a walking bus to safely get the children to class. It helps boost health and cuts down on unnecessary car journeys.
Four showcase schools have been given the go-ahead by councilors.
They're part of Tameside's £300 million plans to radically improve the borough's schools.
Work will start on the new schools next month. They'll be ready for pupils in Summer 2010.
A council service that helps adults with learning disabilities to live independently has been given top marks by government inspectors.
Tameside's Homemaker Service achieved a three-star Excellent Quality rating - the highest possible. The inspection was carried out by the Commission for Social Care Inspection.
Cricket fans at Old Trafford were treated to a musical performance recently by a top performing Tameside School.
Pupils at Godley Primary School entertained the crowds during the lunch break on day one of the Test between England and New Zealand, with a medley of Maori chants and English folk songs.
The youngsters were chosen to perform after the school's Ofsted report made a special mention of singing at the school assembly.
Tameside gets the business thumbs up. That's a key finding from a recent survey. Two thirds of business felt that the borough is a good place to do business.
