Millions of pounds are to be spent on local people’s priorities in the coming year.

That’s the message from Councillor Roy Oldham, Leader of the Council.

£5 million will be spent on community safety, £10 million on services for youth and leisure and a staggering one third of a billion pounds on education.

A government minister visiting Tameside this week praised a new housing scheme that helps people with learning disabilities to live independently. Beaumont Place has apartments for 25 adults.

Phil Hope MP, Cabinet Minister with responsibility for social exclusion, said having learning difficulties should not be a barrier to a fulfilling life.

The £100m regeneration of Droylsden Marina moved one step closer this week when water from the canal was allowed to cascade into the newly built basin. When it’s full, the basin will hold six million litres. The scheme is to be finished in 2013.

Finally, children using Broadbottom Community Centre will have a new play area thanks to Longdendale and Hattersley District Assembly working alongside Broadbottom Community Association to transform the grounds of the centre.

The £30,000 project brings new seating in the grounds and a landscaped garden.
