Additional Learning Needs

The Additional Learning Needs Team provides courses for adults with learning difficulties and / or disabilities.

The team offers a variety of opportunities to learners to study during the day in a wide range of courses. Learners are well supported and many of our classes have classroom assistants to help people to learn to the best of their abilities. Some of our courses lead to a qualification and others are about individual learners achieving their individual learning goals.

Learning at Union Street is not only about courses it's about making new friends, increasing your confidence in talking to others and practising skills you already have. The Additional Learning Needs Team will help you do that too.

Courses

Business Administration Entry level 3 - Accredited

This develops the student’s knowledge and understanding of Office Practice and career opportunities in Office work. The student’s learn how to use a variety of office equipment effectively and develop an understanding of the importance of effective communication in an office environment. Students also develop skills in managing their own health at work and an understanding of their rights and responsibilities. IT courses

Learning to use a computerCity & Guilds Entry Level 3 Certificate in Personal Progression through Practical Work Skills -Accredited

This course develops the personal skills and qualities required for employment. The student’s learn to make a realistic decision about a suitable job, matching personal abilities. They also learn how to complete a formal application and communicate effectively in the workplace and in a formal interview. The learners also take part in and complete tasks in a real work situation, following an action plan.

Gardening - (This course is non accredited)

The students will learn about basic gardening techniques and take part in practical activities at Hyde Park or Pole Bank Park integrating with the Tameside gardeners. This will help build up confidence and communication skills. The students will learn about moving and handling safely, using tools and maintaining planted areas and also how to grow plants from seeds and and how to maintain the environment.

ASDAN Personal Social Development Entry Level 2 - Accredited

This course covers a wide variety of areas including citizenship and community activities plus many more  which involve developing an individuals’ personal and social skills. The students will gain basic knowledge in all of these areas taking part in both practical and theory activities.

Financial Capability - (This course is non accredited)

This course provides an insight into different aspects of managing your own financial affairs. It is designed to cover the basic range of activities that require financial consideration. The course provides an opportunity to embed and contextualise numeracy and literacy in practical situations that students will come across in everyday life.

Access to IT - (This course is non accredited)

This course aims to develop students’ confidence in using ICT. The students will learn to operate ICT equipment safely and use common software applications such as Microsoft word and publisher to input text and images, create and edit documents and send and receive emails.

Catering Entry 3 level - Accredited

This course provides knowledge and insight into the world of catering, developing student’s knowledge and understanding of career opportunities within this industry. The students learn to use a variety of equipment to prepare and serve food, developing an awareness of food safety issues.

Café Project Level 1 Food Safety Awareness Certificate -Accredited

The students develop specific knowledge and an in depth understanding of the Health and Safety issues within the catering business. The students develop safe food handling techniques, are taught how to maintain hygienic standards of food handling, how to maintain clean production areas and equipment and also how to keep a professional and hygienic appearance.

This certificate is awarded to learners who, through studying for one year on the Food Safety awareness course, have been able to sit the Exam for their Certificate in Food Safety.

Event Volunteering Entry Level 3 - Accredited

This Qualification in Preparation for Event Volunteering has been developed from a pilot programme in preparation for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games and will support the sustainability element of the bid for the London 2012 Games.
The qualifications and units have been designed to support learners into work and/or further learning through the development of personal learning and work experience.
The qualifications are particularly targeted at those learners who are currently furthest away from the labour market and need to develop skills to move into employment, would benefit from raising self esteem and confidence through opportunities for volunteering and would benefit from alternative approaches to curriculum and learning.
