Who are we?

Tameside Council Adult Learning has been around for over 10 years! But we have grown and changed over the years to be what we are now. We have a small but committed team of specialist teachers and managers who want to help you to gain new skills. We are managed through Services for  Children and Young People at Tameside Council.

Why we do what we do

We concentrate on 3 specific areas, e-learning (or computers to you and me), literacy, language and numeracy and independent living skills for adults with learning difficulties and / or disabilities. We concentrate on these areas for a very specific reason, Council policy.

E-Learning

As you probably know, the Council is a leading authority for the delivery of services online. We are one of the best in the country at this and we have the awards to prove it. But being the best in the country for online services is only any good if our citizens have the skills to access them. That's why the Council has a policy to increase ICT skills in the borough and that's why we have lots of different courses from Begin at the Beginning in libraries up to ITQ Level 3. We had over 1,000 enrolments on IT courses last year.

Literacy, language and numeracy

We also know that there are lots of people in our community who struggle with the '3 R's', reading, writing and arithmetic and we also know that people can be embarrassed about this or are reluctant to improve their skills. We know that improving your skills can help you and increase your confidence. We have lots of courses and venues that you can choose from and nobody need ever know why you are learning with us.

Did you know that 8 of our current staff were learners with us before they started working for us?

We work closely with Adult Services to provide learning opportunities for adults with learning difficulties and/or disabilities as we want to extend the range of provision on offer. But our courses are not just for people who are in contact with Adult Services. We are based at Union Street Learning Centre (ULC) in Hyde. The Centre has good facilities and is easily accessible.
