How to become a Shared Lives Carer
- We hope you have found the Adult Placement Scheme webpages interesting.
- Once you have read them all, you may be interested in finding out more.
- You can telephone us for an informal chat on 0161 342 5151
- You may also like to send us a message with more questions. Please use the link at the bottom of this page
- You may like to fill out an on-line application form. You are not committing yourself to the Scheme by filling out the form. If you do email the form in to the Team, someone will contact you to discuss what is involved in becoming an Shared Lives Carer in more detail.
- Depending on how you have contacted us, we will visit you at home to give you more information on the Scheme. If you have family or someone else live in your house, it is important that they want to participate in the Scheme too. You will be asked to provide medical and personal references and must agree to a Criminal Records Bureau enhanced check for all people over 18 in your household.
- We will ask you to attend a training course that looks at the many issues involved in being a carer. This helps you become clear in your own mind about exactly what you would be committing yourself to.
- Once you have attended the course, the Shared Lives Officer will arrange to visit you at home to complete your assessment. This also helps you look at how the family or household may be affected by someone living or staying with you. We will then write a report.
- Finally, your references and the report will have to be considered by a panel of senior officers from Community & Adult Services. The Panel have the final say about your acceptance on the Scheme as an Approved Shared Lives Carer.
