Adjusting to Bereavement

We can all benefit from the support of others when someone we love or care about dies. This is entirely normal.

Sometimes emotional support comes from family or friends, if this is available. Sometimes people may not be able to share their thoughts or feelings with family or friends for good and genuine reasons.

How can Age Concern Tameside Help?

If you are over 60 years of age, live in Tameside or Glossop and would like someone to share your thoughts, feelings, memories and future plans with, Age Concern Tameside has a Bereavement Support service with volunteers who will be able to listen and support you as you adjust to changes. We will respect your privacy and your confidentiality.

Who provides the support?

Age Concern volunteers have all received some training in listening skills and bereavement issues. You can choose to suspend of cease our involvement at any stage.

Our volunteers are given ongoing support and training. They will always carry identity cards, which you should ask to see, particularly when they first visit you.

Where do visits take place?

Visits are generally at your own home, unless you prefer them to be held elsewhere.

How to find out more

You can contact the Bereavement Support Scheme Co-ordinator either by telephone or by writing a letter to Age Concern Tameside. The Co-ordinator will then arrange to visit you for an informal chat at a mutually convenient time.

Is there a charge for this service?

There is no charge to the person who receives bereavement support since we receive funding from West Pennine Health Authority to provide the scheme.

Age Concern Tameside is a registered charity which offers a wide range of services to older people in the community. We are dependent on public support and are grateful for the many gifts we receive. All donations are individually acknowledged.

Making more of life

Our aim is simple... to help you make the most of life.

The things we do, ensure that you have the opportunity to live your life to the full. We do that in ways that may surprise you.

We believe that age should be valued. We believe that there should be just as much choice available to those who are older, as to those who are younger. We believe in your right to stay independent for as long as possible.

Our volunteers give practical support and we have expert information you can rely on. We can insure your house, your travel and give you peace of mind in many other ways. We campaign for your rights to make your voice heard.

Wherever you are, we are. By responding to your needs we enable you to do things your way. Above all, we strive to make daily life better both now and in the future.
