Bereavement Services


Scope of Bereavement Services

  • Tameside Bereavement services provide all burial; cremation, exhumation and memorial facilities and we are dedicated to providing the highest possible standards of service.
  • We aim to ensure that the entire bereavement experience occurs without error or insensitivity and meets religious, secular, ethnic and cultural needs of the bereaved.
  • We aim to ensure all our 8 cemeteries and Crematorium are a safe place for visitors and that all buildings and grounds are kept to a high standard.

2008/09 Workgroup Key Priorities

  • To retain Green Flag Status for Denton Cemetery
  • To retain The Charter for the Bereaved
  • Complete refurbishment of Registrars Office - new private interview room - new archive/search room.
  • To extend Droylsden Cemetery land to ensure space for future burials
  • Provide a plasma screen and speaker system to the annex at Dukinfield Crematorium such that an additional number of mourners can be involved in the service.
  • Investigate web based access to services at Dukinfield Crematorium
  • Carry out memorial inspections in accordance with the Key Decision.
  • To procure the installation of mercury abatement at Dukinfield Crematorium through European Tender.

Main Achievements

  • Achieved Green Flag Status from The Civic Trust for Denton Cemetery.
  • Major footpath repairs were carried out at Audenshaw and Droylsden Cemetery Ext.
  • Retained The Charter for the Bereaved
  • Opened a Woodland burial section
  • Installed a running water supply for visitors at Droylsden Cemetery
  • Awarded a £400k contract to local company following procurement in Europe.
  • Created private interview rooms at Dukinfield Crematorium Office for the public

Performance against Business Plan Objectives

The Bereavement Services Business Plan for 2008709 identified 17 separate action plans.

12 of these objectives were carried out. 4 of them were carried forward to the 2009/10 Business Plan and 1 was not met due to lack of resources.

Key Priorities for 2009/10

  • To maintain the "Green Flag" award for Denton Cemetery.
  • Transform the derelict Chapel area at Ashton Cemetery into a new car park for visitors.
  • Complete the Capital programme 2009/10 for cemetery footpath renewal (Mossley Cemetery, Droylsden New Ext & Dukinfield (Duk side))
  • Provide additional lighting to the main access road at Dukinfield Cemetery & Crematorium
  • Convert unused annex attached to Droylsden Cemetery Chapel into a Modern Waiting Room
  • To create new choices for families with regard to memorials available.
  • Introduce access to funeral services via the Internet for families with relatives abroad, housebound, in hospital etc
  • To implement a heat recovery system at Dukinfield Crematorium following an 82% support from the public
