Refuse Collection
Scope of Refuse Service
- Collection of domestic refuse across Tameside, which equates to approximately 97,200 premises.
- Collection of trade refuse across Tameside, which equates to approximately 2000 premises per year.
- Rural Collection for premises that are harder to reach.
- Bin deliveries, including the delivery of Green, Brown, Trade, Black and Blue bins.
- Bulky Collection for items such as three piece suites, furniture, mattresses, etc.
- Paper, Cardboard & Tetrapaks collection for recycling.
- Glass, Plastics & Cans collection for recycling.
- Garden Waste collection.
2008/09 Workgroup Key Priorities
- Increase recycling rates by rolling out more managed collection rounds.
- Reduce costs across the service area.
- Contribute to an overall increase in recycling.
- Reduce levels of missed collections.
- Introduce further collection rounds to assist recycling activities.
Main Achievements
- Expansion of the managed collection throughout the borough to achieve Central Government Target.
- Improved offices and vehicles which has raised moral of the work force.
Performance against Business Plan Objectives
The reliance on agency staff has been reduced. The recycling operation has been absorbed in the existing waste services operation. Regular meetings between management and union representatives are being maintained.
Other Key Issues
Again we maintained our year round collection of waste by collecting through the Xmas and New Year period. A new fleet of vehicles is now in operation. A level of full employment will be reached in late 2009 following the results of the job evaluation process.
Key Priorities for 2009/10
- Develop training provided to staff.
- Complete move towards managed collections in the Borough.
- Reduce levels of missed collections.
- Streamline the software used to get a more efficient service.
- Reduce costs across the service area.
- Contribute to an overall increase in recycling.
- Introduce further collection rounds to assist recycling activities.
- Reducing sickness absence.
