Tameside Statues

There is a series of statues in the borough, nine of which celebrate the heritage of Tameside. A statue is located in each of the borough’s nine towns. Each town has an individual and diverse history and this is reflected in the choice of subject for each statue.

There are also bronze statues to commemorate the sporting history of the borough. One is located outside Aldwynians Rugby Club in Audenshaw and the other is located at the Roy Oldham Sports Village in Ashton and features three holders of football World Cup winner’s medals: Sir Geoff Hurst MBE and Jimmy Armfield CBE, who were with England in 1966, and Simone Perrotta who was born in Ashton but played for Italy in 2006.

The political history of Tameside is also celebrated with a bronze statue celebrating the Chartist movement for social reform which is located in Hyde Town Centre.

Five distinctive bronze sculptures have been installed in Ashton town centre; they include four children and a miner. They have been carefully positioned to surprise and delight passers-by.

Seven aluminium statues are located along Lord Sheldon Way at the boundary of Ashton and Audenshaw, they reflect local leisure pastime.

Bronze Heritage Maps

Alongside an extensive programme that is bringing a variety of heritage statues and sculptures to the Borough, the Council has continued its commitment to bring public art to every area of Tameside with a series of bronze heritage maps installed in various towns. Maps have been unveiled in Mottram, in Waterloo, Ashton-under-Lyne and Dukinfield.

There is also a video available of the Ashton Waterloo Heritage map unveiling.

The Tameside Local History Forum

The Forum was established in January 2000 to increase public awareness and use of all the elements of local history throughout the Borough. The aim is to promote the study of archive and source material for social, business and archaeological purposes, and to make sure that such material is well preserved, collated and accessible to all.
