Myth Fact
  • Two Bodies have been found in the burnt-out Ashton Market Hall.
  • No-one was injured in the fire, despite the extensive damage to property.
  • Three people have been arrested in connection with the fire at Ashton Market Hall.
  • The police and Fire-Brigade are continuing their investigations into possible causes of the fire. At this time there is no suggestion that any crime has been committed.
  • The Market Hall was not covered by the Council's insurance policy.
  • The Market Hall was fully insured, both for re-instatement and for the provision of temporary trading premises.
  • None of the market traders were able to get insurance because they were in a market hall.
  • Many traders at Ashton Market Hall were fully insured for their losses arising from the fire.
  • The Ashton Market Hall Phoenix Fund has been set up to re-build the Market Hall.
  • The specific purpose of The Ashton Market Hall Phoenix Fund is to provide "seed-corn" funding for traders not insured against the fire, to acquire sufficient stock to re-start their businesses when the temporary Market Hall is opened.
  • The Council will use Phoenix Fund money for other things.
  • The Phoenix Fund is completely independent and separate from the Council. Its trustees, including David Heyes MP, will ensure the highest levels of probity in the conduct of the fund and eventual disbursements.
  • The temporary Market Hall will be miles from the town centre and anyway, it won't be open for almost a year.
  • The temporary Market Hall will be situated on Old Cross Street car park. At almost 2500 m², the area is large enough to house all the traders from the Market Hall. Work has already begun on the site and the food hall will be open in three months.
