Ashton Market Hall Fire - Latest Information

Ashton Market Hall Fire - Latest Information

PR 2762

People flocked to Ashton-under-Lyne town centre over the weekend, as the outdoor market reopened on Saturday - and the monthly farmers market on Sunday was packed.

Council staff today thanked everyone for their patience as work continues to make safe the shell of the Victorian Listed building and to provide a temporary indoor market hall.

They also thanked customers and visitors for their tremendous support over the weekend.

The outdoor market is now fully reopen - and trading appears brisk today, despite the rain - as are the shops on Market St and most of the shops on Bow St.

For safety reasons, Beaverbrooks, KwikSave and Three Cooks Cafe will need to remain closed until part of the market hall wall is shored up with scaffolding.

The taxi rank outside the market hall has been moved to George St, opposite Molly Malones.

Fire and police services will be continuing their investigation for a number of days and, until their work is complete, the site remains under their control.

The council is working hard to open a new, temporary indoor market for Ashton as soon as possible. A site has been identified and we hope to have it up and ready to trade in around three months.

There are parking spaces for disabled visitors in car parks around the town centre: Camp St, Henrietta St, Old Cross St, Swan St and Union St.

If you are a market trader, shop owner or have a specific enquiry about the market, you can get advice from council staff in the Welcome Inn today and Wednesday.
