Anti-Social Behaviour
You said
- You were worried about Anti Social Behaviour, in particular teenagers causing a nuisance on the streets
We Have
- Introduced dedicated anti social behaviour officers to work closely with local residents
- Given presentations to young people in schools around anti social behaviour
- Sent 1800 letters written to parents of young people found to be acting anti-socially
- Used Acceptable Behaviour Contracts (ABCs) to help our young people to change their behaviour
- Referred young people to the Positive Activities Scheme to give them an alternative to hanging around on the street
- Used Anti Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs) for serious and persistent offenders
- Empowered victims and witness to stand up to anti social behaviour by offering specialist support and equipment
- Set up a free Mediation Service to help resolve disputes
Burglary Reduction
You said
- Despite a massive drop in burglary rates of 45%, you are still worried about being burgled
- You wanted information on doorstep crime and crime reduction delivered face to face
We Have
- Tailored security packages to meet specific needs
- Continued with successful initiatives such as Alley-gating and Distraction Burglary reduction
- Introduced Community Presentations to raise awareness
- Established an early warning network with partner agencies to reduced bogus callers
- Introduced a Rapid Response Team for burglary and doorstep crime

- Schemes like Alley-gating have made a real difference to people feeling safer
- Over 1,500 fewer victims of burglary
“The introduction of the alley gating scheme enabled the residents to reclaim some of the land for a community garden. This has not only improved the environment but has also really improved the community spirit, we live in a mixed area, Asian and White people, young and old and since the alley gating everybody knows each other that little bit better. We often get compliments from people passing by on how nice the garden is, we are very proud of it”
Reducing Drug and Alcohol Harm
You said
- You want to feel safer in our town centres after dark
- There were concerns about our Young People drinking alcohol on the streets
- You asked for support to address substance misuse in our community
We Have
- Introduced a multi agency initiative to tackle night time disorder in our town centres (STAND)
- The DAAT works alongside Trading Standards to reduce the supply of alcohol to Young people
- Young people found on the streets drinking alcohol are being referred to both the Anti Social Behaviour Team and the Branching Out service
- Trained practitioners in drug and alcohol awareness
- Commissioned a dedicated Diversity Worker to develop a drugs and diversity network, working with hard to reach groups
- Linked agencies with the wider diverse community to develop community champions across the borough
Outcomes
- An increase in local people accessing drug and alcohol services
- A reduction in alcohol related fires linked to the night time economy
- A reduction in violent crime
- An increase in the number of BME service users accessing treatment services
- The development of a service user forum and consultation plan through a dedicated Service User Consultation Worker
Domestic Abuse
Survivors of domestic abuse told us they want:
- To know more about home security and personal safety
- A constant and non-judgemental approach from services
- Help for male victims as well
- More support for survivors of domestic abuse many of whom are from minority communities who do not ask for help
We Have
- Sanctuary Housing Project – Partnership venture with New Charter Housing Trust, the Police, Fire Service, and other registered social landlords – Survivors of domestic abuse are made safer in their own homes
- Developed awareness training with Tameside Safeguarding Children Board for practitioners
- Run briefing sessions for Tameside Fire and Rescue Service on Domestic Abuse and Safeguarding Children
- Worked with Sure Start Ashton and Tameside Women’s Project to initiate a specialist Support Worker Post
- Incorporate a the issue of forced marriage within child protection training and Tameside LSCB launched ‘Policy for Working with Young People Facing Forced Marriage’
Outcomes
- 170 practitioners have undergone awareness training delivered by volunteers
- To date, the Santuary housing service has received more than 130 referrals. 100 of the households have children and 4 male victims are accommodated
Partners and Communities Together (PACT)
You Said
- You wanted more uniformed officers on the streets
- You want to know who’s working in your area tackling issues that concern you most
We Have
- Introduced neighbourhood policing using the PACT model
- Dedicated Police Officers, Patrollers and Police Community Support Officers for each of our nineteen wards
- Officers working in Partnership with other agencies and with local residents.
- Local priorities agreed at monthly PACT meetings and issues are discussed and solutions agreed together
- Local volunteers support PACT meetings and colleagues in the Third Sector are helping us to reach even more community and voluntary groups, and hard to reach communities
- Introduced Neighbourhood Team postcards – one for every house in Tameside and bespoke for every Ward
Outcomes
- By talking to local people, listening to their views and acting on their concerns we have
- Increased the number of operations to tackle crime, anti-social behaviour and environmental nuisance
- Reduced crime in Tameside to an all-time low
- Seen fantastic results in our first survey of the Neighbourhood Policing Family
