Tameside Children and Young People Strategic Partnership - Four Area Model

Multi-agency Management Teams:

  • Meet six times per year
  • Pooling resources and multi-agency events
  • Area based profile of needs informs commissioning
  • Area action plans improve access to integrated services and local engagement

Neighbourhood Networking Events:

  • Area profile of needs
  • Engage parents, teenage mums, pre-school and primary school children and families with older children
  • Provide information on Bookstart, Connexions, Children's Information Service, nutrition and dental care

Tameside Children and Young People Strategic Partnership - Play Strategy

Involves parents, children and young people, Jubilee Gardens Children's Centre for disabled children and OKE (Our Kids Eyes)

Children and Young People say:

Play is being with friends, doing what you want without being told what to do, having fun and enjoying yourself!

Parents want:

More inclusive equipment at parks and play areas, a playground at Jubilee Gardens, more accessible playgrounds and more activities in museums

Outcomes:

  • New equipment for physically disabled children in play areas
  • New parking bays at bigger play areas and parks
  • More play areas and term-time activities in museums for pre-schools

Building Schools for the Future

  • Remodelling/rebuilding high schools
  • New ways of learning and teaching – using ICT
  • Improved maintenance of schools
  • Because every child does matter!

Pupils from all schools are involved through:

  • Vision launch event – interview with the Minister for Education (Nov 05)
  • Visioning conferences and design festivals (Nov 05 and July 06)
  • National Conference – presentation by Tameside students on involving students in school design (Feb 07)
  • Briefing of potential partners by students at BSF launch event (March 07)
  • Student Voice working group

Joint Assessment System for Prevention and Early Referral (JASPER)

What is JASPER?

  • A locally developed information sharing database
  • Enables organisations in Tameside to provide a better service to children and young people
  • Helps meet the requirements of “Every Child Matters”

What Does it do?

  • Information on children and young people is held in different places by different organisations
  • This can cause problems, making it more difficult to provide the best service for the child or young person
  • JASPER improves communication between agencies so they can provide the best possible service

What information will be shared?

  • JASPER system will hold the following information for every child and young person in Tameside, from birth to 18 years:
    • Name
    • Address
    • Gender
    • Date of birth
    • Name and contact details of their school or college
    • Statement of involvement
  • Access is restricted to authorised users
  • All users will have to go through appropriate security checks

Tameside Youth Opportunity Fund

  • Funded by the government to support young people projects all over Tameside
  • Two-year project extended for three more years
  • A Grant Panel of 21 young people meet weekly to:
    • Make funding decisions
    • Undertake training
    • Visit applying groups
    • Attend publicity events and organise award ceremonies

Outcomes include:

  • Ball attended by 250 guests
  • Panel members receive Level 2 OCN award
  • Four new Area Panels in development – one per area

Youth Online Survey

  • Every two years with Year 10 pupils
  • Pupils log on to survey during ICT or PSHE lessons at school
  • 19 local schools took part in 2006, including Pupil Referral Units and Special Schools
  • Response rate of 54% achieved in 2006
  • Topics include:
    • Views on Tameside
    • Views of TMBC
    • Views of local services
    • Bullying
    • Sex and relationship education
    • Health
  • Results reported to schools, young people, Children & Young People Strategic Partnership, senior managers and officers from organisations across Tameside

Outcomes

  • Widened Youth Service access - Major youth consultation exercise
  • Enhanced drugs and alcohol support services including PHSE
  • Launched 14-19 diplomas from 2008
  • Increase in staying on rates due to rising GCSE results
