Learning Visits
In 2005 Tameside MBC was awarded Beacon Status in the theme "Getting Closer to Communities". Tameside MBC's innovation is based on a desire to get closer to service users and to feed their views into policy and practice. Tameside's status as 4 star **** "Improving Well" reflects in no small way how the council has succeeded in listening to and reflecting the aspirations of Tameside people.
Following the successful Open Day event which was held in October 2005, Tameside MBC will continue to disseminate learning covering the theme Getting Closer to Communities.
The emphasis is on spreading good and innovative practices to a wide range of audiences, based around these key messages:
- Giving citizens a real sense of being involved and resolving issues in partnership with the Council - not the traditional 'we know what's best for them' approach. Drawing on the resources and expertise of our partners through the development of a strong partnership approach, which recognises the complex needs of individuals and which can only be met by an integrated strategy.
- Novel and innovative methods of consultation, based on long experience, which guarantee the results of those consultations can be used as the basis for directing and redirecting resources to meet the expressed needs of the public.
- Listening to and taking forward the views and aspirations of that part of the community which is traditionally seen as a problem and a nuisance - engaging with young people.
We aim to disseminate these key messages to other less well established partnerships, councils (where a lead role is required to develop partnerships), individual agencies (including funders and providers of services) and community and voluntary groups. As part of the dissemination programme, Tameside will also take the opportunity to further raise the profile of the services available to get even closer to its own communities.
We will continue to develop our Beacon Website to ensure that the most up to date information is directly to hand. We are working on "How to Guides" which will be published in the coming months and we are happy to organise specific "one-to-one" visits to enable people to see best practice at first hand.
Our Open Day Workshops covered the themes below, which we can offer for immediate learning visits.
