Denton Church

St. Lawrence Church

In the grounds of the Church of St. Lawrence this plaque celebrates the history of the building. Erected early sixteenth century and originally dedicated to St. James until the discovery in the mid-nineteenth century of a stained glass window to St. Lawrence. The Church is affectionately known as Th' Owd Peg', because its framework was fastened together with wooden pegs. Resting place of John Angier (see list) and also of Colonel Robert Duckenfield, Tameside Civil War hero to whom there is a memorial stone in the Churchyard.
