Blue Plaque - George Lawton
A Tribute to
George Lawton
1878 - 1949
This plaque erected on the George Lawton Hall, honours George Lawton, the son of Mr. John Lawton, a Mossley magistrate and alderman and a manager of cotton mills. He inherited the whole of the considerable family fortune and when he died in August 1949, apart from certain legacies, left his entire fortune to the people of Mossley and the town he loved so dearly. In his will he left a wish that part of his fortune, estimated at about £40,000 should be expended on a new public building; hence the George Lawton Hall was built.
