Brown Bin Garden Waste Collection Service

New Garden Waste Collection Service

A picture of a gardenTameside Council have introduced a Brown Bin service for the collection of garden waste to your area. This service will make it easy for you to dispose of your garden waste with the convenience of a fortnightly kerbside collection. Properties in Tameside have been supplied with a brown wheelie bin, which is the same size as your black wheelie bin.

Join the Scheme

During Spring 2006, the scheme was rolled out to many properties across the borough.

If you have not yet received a bin but would like one, please contact us using the details at the bottom of this page. Kerbside collections will take place every other week. Please leave your bin out from 7.00am on the day of collection. You can click here to see the Brown Bin Collection Dates.

Once collected your garden waste will be taken to a local facility where it is shredded before being composted.

Why Compost?

A large percentage of the rubbish in your dustbin is green waste, including grass cuttings and prunings, which are ideal for making compost.

Composting produces a natural soil enhancer and also prevents garden waste being sent to landfill sites where it rots underground and has the potential to pollute the air and waterways.

Tameside Council is keen to reduce the amount of waste that is currently being sent to landfill sites and needs you to help us reach the government target of 33% recycling rate by 2010.

By agreeing to take part in our scheme you will be helping to increase the borough's recycling rate and be doing your bit for the environment.

If you do not wish to take part in the brown bin scheme, you may also want to consider purchasing a home composter for use on your own garden. Home composter bins can also be used in addition to your brown bin to compost fruit and vegetable waste.
