Tameside Secondary School Review Consultation
This consultation has now closed
Building Schools for the Future (BSF) is a national initiative that aims to update secondary schools right across the country. The aim of this project is to transform secondary education to meet the needs of pupils and the wider community in the 21st century. It will mean better schools to learn in, to teach in and to work in. It will also give us the opportunity to bring a range of services together in strategic locations across Tameside in order to better meet the needs of children and young people.
We are undertaking this review primarily because of falling birth rates. Fewer children will be coming into our high schools in future. This means we will have a lot of "surplus places". We have to reduce the number of school places so that we are not paying to maintain half-empty buildings but can channel that money into learning and teaching resources so that our children can be educated effectively and efficiently, to a high standard.
To help achieve this reduction we will be making the largest investment in our schools infrastructure in the history of Tameside, as Tameside Council has been successful in its bid for funding from the Government's Building Schools for the Future programme.
It is important to stress that no decisions have been made. Tameside Council wishes to consult widely, particularly with parents and local schools. The consultation ended on 26th June 2006.
