Droylsden Academy

Decision notice 28 January 2009

Adjudicator publishes decision on proposals by Tameside metropolitan borough council to close Droylsden school mathematics and computing college for girls and Littlemoss high school for boys, Droylsden, Lancashire from 31 August 2009.

The adjudicator, Ms June Brown, approved proposals to close Droylsden School Mathematics and Computing College for Girls and Littlemoss High School for Boys from 31 August 2009 conditional on the Secretary of State signing an Academy Funding Agreement by 30 April 2009.

The co-educational Academy, sponsored by Tameside College, would then open on 1st September 2009, initially in the existing buildings of the two closing schools. A new Academy building for 1200 students aged 11-18 will be constructed on the girls' school site. In making her decision, Ms Brown also agreed to revoke previous closure proposals for the two schools and a linked proposal that would have replaced them with a community school.

Notes to Editors

Schools adjudicators are independent of the Government. They decide on school organisation issues, disputes on land transfer and assets and admission arrangements which cannot be resolved locally. They were appointed under the School Standards and Framework Act 1998. Their role is to look afresh at all cases referred to them, considering each case on its merits and taking account of the reasons for disagreement at local level in the light of the legislation and the guidance in the School Admissions Code.

Copies of the determination reached by the adjudicator can be obtained from the Office of the Schools Adjudicator. It can also be found on the Schools Adjudicator Website Link to External Website. Individual adjudicators are not in a position to comment on their decisions but, if clarification of those decisions is needed, enquiries can be addressed to: The Office of the Schools Adjudicator, Mowden Hall, Staindrop Road, Darlington DL3 9BG
