Structural Surveys and Investigations
Structural Surveys and Investigations
If you are the owner of a building structure and are concerned about its condition, or are considering making alterations or changing its usage, a structural condition survey is an appropriate place to start.
A survey will help you to establish whether the property is in a structurally sound condition and whether there are any initial signs of disrepair that are in need of attention. Often if the early signs of any defect can be detected, inexpensive actions can be put into effect to prevent the onset of more significant damage. Advice on these matters is best obtained from an experienced, reputable and qualified structural engineer.
Should you wish to arrange to carry out changes in the layout of a building or wish to change it from it's present use to an alternative use, then an accurate assessment of the means of structural support will need to be established. Calculations may then be undertaken to establish the suitability of any proposed changes.
Failure to carry out such checks may render the building unstable under the new loading arrangements. A structural survey will enable the building owner to establish the suitability of a building for any proposed structural changes or change of use.
Our Engineering Design Unit may be able to advise you on such matters and how to obtain advice on the condition of your building.
Changes to the structure of a building are likely to need planning and building regulation approval.
