Branching Out
Drug and Alcohol Treatment Service for Young People
About Branching Out
Branching Out provides a confidential service to young people and their families who are seeking advice and assistance around substance use. We also work alongside professionals such as youth workers and teachers to support them around issues concerning substance misuse amongst young people.
The service has the following aims:
- To work alongside individuals or groups of young people (under 19) who use or are at risk of using drugs and alcohol
- To provide support and advice for anyone who is affected by the substance use of others, including friends, families and partners
- To work alongside professionals and advise them in their work with young people in the area of substance misuse
The service brings together staff from two established substance misuse organisations Lifeline and Turning Point to provide an integrated service working throughout the Tameside and Glossop area.

Case Studies
Branching Out provides a number of services for young people and the families and carers of substance users.
The young persons team works with young people under 19 who are using or at risking drugs and alcohol.
We offer groupwork and education sessions for groups of young people and professionals who want to learn more about drugs and alcohol.
We also work on a one to one basis with young people who want to access support around their drug and alcohol use. Referrals to the service can be made by individuals themselves, family members, friends and carers or by professionals. Workers will make arrangements to meet up with young people at a location which suits them, this might mean coming into the Branching Out office or meeting at school home or within another youth agency. Branching Out has a confidentiality policy which means that under most circumstances staff will not speak to other people (including professionals, families or carers) about what is discussed within a meeting. Staff will work with young people to identify what their aims are around their substance use, this might be to stop using drugs and alcohol, reduce their use or to use more safely.
Branching Out has a GP who works within the service offering young people the opportunity to access support around general health needs and prescribing around their drug use. Young people who are engaged with the service can also access needle exchange facilities at Branching Out.
The parents and carers team works with the parents and carers of drug and alcohol users of any age. Staff offer support through a drop in session, over the telephone , through home to home visits or through appointments at the Branching Out building. Staff are available to support the families and carers of substance users through helping them to access other services and proving advice and information.
