Tameside's CCTV Control Room is working around the clock to ensure public safety, to enhance the quality of life and assisting to reduce the fear of crime. Radio Link system in all of the towns supported by CCTV coverage has assisted operators in tracking of known criminals, and the two way flow of information and intelligence between CCTV operators, retailers, the Police and Town Patrollers has resulted in a highly effective network of key players in the fight against crime and disorder.

The capabilities of the state of the art IP networked system with its modern high-speed dome cameras and intelligence gathering amongst partners has led to many significant achievements. Since the extensive installation of CCTV around the borough, there has been a downward trend in the reported crime levels within town centres. It is these falls that show that the contribution of a high visibility CCTV system is a key asset in Tameside's anti crime arsenal.

CCTV Code of Practice

An image of one of the CCTV cameras used by Tameside MBCTameside Council are required by our Code of Practice 258.44 KB PDF File, based on advice from the Information Commissioner Link to External Website, to record any significant incidents monitored and recorded by the system. 'Significant' incidents include those where operators are confident or strongly suspect that a crime is being committed and that the police should be alerted or that one of the other emergency services needs to be contacted (for example a fire or a person appearing to need medical attention).

Tameside Council is committed to ensuring that the CCTV system provides protection to the public and supports the work of the Police by providing evidence and intelligence to aid prosecutions. We are also determined to ensure that the civil liberties and human rights of its citizens and visitors to the Borough are not infringed by improper use of CCTV. The CCTV Code of Practice that the Council has adopted contains clear guidelines on how the system should be operated and what constitutes improper use.
