Environmental Searches and Information

Environmental Searches

The Council is approached for environmental information on a regular basis. Some of the common reasons we are contacted include:

  • For information on contamination issues in relation to a property transaction
  • For information that has been requested by a private search company (usually as part of a property transaction)
  • By consultants/companies undertaking an environmental assessment of a site (usually related to purchase, development, or to assess company liabilities)
  • Where someone is interested in collecting information on their property

The Environmental Protection Unit holds a range of environmental information. Where requested the Environmental Protection Unit will provide information in the form of a search.

The Council provides the following searches. You can view a template of each search by clicking on it. Full details of the range and limitations of information available within the Environmental Protection Unit are included within the template of each search.

If you wish to discuss your search further you should contact the Contaminated Land Service

General environmental search £80 + VAT 253.32 KB Adobe Acrobat Format - A search of general environmental information available within the Environmental Protection Unit for the Tameside Borough. Full details of the information provided within the general environmental search are provided within the search template (view by clicking this box). Where significant environmental reporting, or paper files are available an additional charge will be made to provide this information. Details of additional charges are provided within 'Additional search requirements' below.

Landfill search £50 + VAT 287.28 KB Adobe Acrobat Format - A search of landfill information available within the Environmental Protection Unit for the Tameside Borough. Full details of the information provided within the landfill search are provided within the search template (view by clicking this box). Where significant environmental reporting, or paper files are available an additional charge will be made to provide this information. Details of additional charges are provided within ‘Additional search requirements’ below.

Additional search requirements - During a general environmental search or landfill search, reporting or other information is often identified. Usually, where a significant amount of information is available a further charge will be made to provide the information. This will usually be based on the expected officer time taken to provide the information and internal printing costs. Most information may be viewed at the Council Offices. If you wish to view information at the Council Offices or have any other special search requirements you should contact the Contaminated Land Service.

Responding to your search request

Under the Environmental Information Regulation 2004, the Council has 20 days to provide information following a search request. Under normal circumstances the Environmental Protection Unit will respond sooner.

On receiving your request for information, if appropriate payment is not already enclosed, the Environmental Protection Unit will contact you to discuss your search requirements and inform you of the search fee. Before completing the search full payment will usually be required.

Costs and Payments

The cost of a search is based on the average time taken for an officer to research information available within the Environmental Protection Unit and prepare a response.

The costs for each search are provided within the above boxes. The Environmental Protection Unit will not usually complete a search until full payment is received.

Cheques should be made payable to Tameside MBC.

We would recommend that you always confirm the cost of your search with the Environmental Protection Unit before sending in your payment.

If upon receiving a search request the Environmental Protection Unit considers that it will take a significantly greater length of time to complete, a higher fee will be charged.

Other Information

Much of the information that the Environmental Protection Unit provides as part of a search is available from other sources within the Council and from other organisations. In some cases these other sources of information will be more up-to-date and more reliable. View useful links to other websites and information
