Byelaws - Drinking in Public Places

This Bye-law prohibits the consumption of alcohol in designated public places throughout the Borough of Tameside.

Any person who consumes intoxicating liquor in a public place in Tameside can be warned not to do so by the Police.

If, after that warning, the person consumes liquor in a public place then they will be guilty of an offence which is subject to a fine not exceeding £500.

The exceptions where it is not an offence are as follows:-

  • Any area within the curtilage of any licensed premises or registered club

  • Any area or place which has been granted a temporary licence to sell intoxicating liquor

  • Any area next to a licensed premise where the licensee has been granted a permit for the provision of refreshment

Signs are located in various parts of Tameside which give warning to the public that this bye-law is in place.
