What can First Call do for me?
First Call is here to assist with small jobs right through to major repairs for your home.
How can First Call help me?
A team of specially selected and trained volunteers can carry out a range of tasks, for example:
- Fit a light bulb
- Change a fuse
- Unblock a sink
- Replace a tap washer
- Hang a pair of curtains
- Rearrange furniture
- Replace batteries in smoke alarms
- Fit security items like door locks, chains and viewers
What will First Call cost me?
First Call will supply the volunteers and labour free of charge, you just supply or pay for the materials.
Can First Call help with bigger jobs?
If you have repairs or tasks which need more time or skill than a volunteer could offer, we are also able to help you to select an appropriate trades person or local firm.
First Call can help you in many ways
- Provide advice on repairs, improvements or adaptations to your home which will suit your needs. You may feel that by having a shower installed or an extra banister fitted, you could remain longer in your own home living independently.
- Share with you our list of approved firms/contractors who have been vetted and have agreed to adhere to Age Concern Tameside's Code of Conduct.
- Support you with your choice of firm to ensure that you have a good job at a good price, and that they meet your expectations.
- Help you to obtain quotations for work to make sure you get the best deal so that you don't feel vulnerable.
- Offer advice on eligibility for financial assistance towards the cost of work and help you to make applications for grants.
- Act on behalf of older people who need further support in organising and overseeing work through to completion.
First Call is a joint initiative between Age Concern Tameside and Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council. We can also bring together expertise from other organisations to help and support you.
First Call is available to all older people living in Tameside.
