Werneth Low Country Park
The Service
Werneth Low Country Park is two kilometres south-east of the town of Hyde. It covers 80 hectares (200 acres) of land on the northern and western slopes of Werneth Low, on the edge of the Pennines.
Most of this land was bought after the Great War as a tribute to the men from the area who died. This land was looked after by the Hyde War Memorial Trust and a monument was put up on the high ground. In 1979 this land, and land next to it owned by Tameside Council, was made into Werneth Low Country Park.
Tameside Council and the Trust are partners on the Werneth Low Country Park Joint Management Committee. This committee oversees how the park is run.
The Country Park Ranger Service manages the day-to-day running of the park. This service is based at the Lower Higham Visitor Centre. It is made up of a full-time ranger, information officer and voluntary rangers. Our countryside estate team, who work throughout Tameside, also help to maintain the park.
The rangers' work includes:
- meeting and helping visitors;
- caring for and patrolling the country park;
- organising and running an events programme;
- working with local schools;
- giving talks;
- preparing visitor centre exhibitions; and
- preparing leaflets about the area.
You do not have to pay to visit the park or the visitor centre.
You can visit the park at any time.
The visitor centre's opening hours are:
Saturday - 12.30pm to 4.30pm
Sunday - 12.30pm to 4.30pm
Tuesday - 11.45am to 4pm
Bank holidays - 12.30pm to 4pm
(The centre is not open on Christmas Day or Boxing Day)
There is always a member of staff on duty in the centre during opening hours. You can also contact the ranger outside the opening hours shown above by phoning 0161 368 6667.
If you are disabled
The rangers are there to welcome everyone, and have been trained to be aware of disabled people's needs.
It is easy to get to the visitor centre from the Lower Higham Car Park. There is a toilet for people with special needs next to the centre. People in wheelchairs can visit the Croft Picnic Area and the herb garden. There is also a wheelchair route from the Quarry Car Park at the upper end of the Country Park to the war memorial.
How much it costs
It costs about £52,000 a year to look after Werneth Low Country Park. This works out at about 25p a year for each person who lives in Tameside. This amount includes:
- staff salaries;
- the cost of running the centre and maintaining the country park land;
- running an events programme;
- working with local schools;
- putting on exhibitions; and
- preparing leaflets about the area.
We are committed to providing a quality service
