Tameside Sports Development Unit

Get Involved with Sports Development in Tameside and help create a network of sporting opportunities for young people.

By learning how to become a sports coach, you can benefit yourself and others. The development of sport through coaching spreads the positive aspects of an active life throughout the community. Tameside Sports Development Unit is offering a comprehensive range of coaching qualifications all at low prices.

The following courses can all be booked on-line and paid for with a credit card (please note that there are concessionary rates available for the unemployed - if you wish to book a course at these reduced rates you should print out the booking form and return it to us by post together with proof of your entitlement (in the form of a copy of your unemployment benefit book).

Walk Leaders Course – Level 1

Pre Requisition: 18 years of age and prepared to lead walks for local schemes. Please bring outdoor clothing.

This is a one day course which is ideal for anyone wishing to lead a group of people on a short / health walk in the future. There are no exams and it is free.

Sports Leaders UK - Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership

This award gives people aged 14 and over the skills needed to lead groups in safe sporting and recreational activity.
The Majority of the course is practical in nature with an emphasis on learning through doing, rather than through
written work.

Map and Route Planning Workshop

Date: 23rd June 09
Time: 9.30am - 4.00pm
Venue: T.C.B
Cost: Free
Pre Requisition
: 18 years of age and a qualified walk leader. Please bring outdoor clothing and a 1/25000 Ordnance Survey map ( Manchester & Salford sheet ).

This one day course will cover how to use the 1/25000 Ordnance Survey map and how to plan new walking routes. The course is aimed at walk leaders who want to broaden their horizons.

 Level One Certificate in Coaching Cycling (L1CC)

Date: 21st March & 18th April 09

The Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Cycling (L1CCC) is the new entry-level award into the British Cycling Coach Education Programme, aimed at people new to coaching and cycling. This new qualification provides you with an introduction to the principles of safe, ethical and effective management and coaching of cycling sessions. The certificate qualifies you to independently prepare for, deliver and review pre-prepared coaching sessions to groups of adults or children. The course covers all of the basics of cycle coaching and qualifies coaches to deliver British Cycling Go-Ride Gears 1 and 2 activities.

 YMCA Exercise to Music Course – CYQ Level 2

Pre Requisition: 18 years of age and experience of participating in exercise to music classes.
Cost: £500 However students and anyone receiving benefits can receive a discount.

This course offers successful candidates the opportunity to enjoy a dynamic, rewarding and sociable career,working in an environment where the people you meet and work with are as passionate about fitness as you. The format of the course is 14 days plus 1 assessment day and the content is a mixture of theory and practical.

 Level One Hockey VRQ Coaching Assistant Award

Date and Time: 14th January 09 (Theory): 6:00am - 9:00pm, 18th & 25th January 09 (Practical): 9.30am - 5.30pm

The level one award is intended to provide the essential skills and knowledge necessary to run a safe and enjoyable coaching session. Level one is suitable for those with some experience of playing Hockey and perhaps practice in a teaching environment.

ECB Cricket Coaching (Level 1 and 2)

ECB Cricket Coaching Assistant (UKCC1):

Date: 26th October 08 & 2nd, 9th, 16th November 08
Time: 9.00am - 5.00pm
Venue: West Hill High School, Thompson Cross, Stalybridge, SK15 1LX

The Level 1 course will be suitable for you if you have limited cricket experience and / or no coaching experience. It is designed to help you to “assist more qualified coaches, delivering aspects of coaching sessions, normally under the direct supervision of an ECB Coach”. This may include:

  • Running Warm ups / cool downs
  • Organising Small sided games
  • Coaching Small groups

Course requirements

  • 4 x 3 hour modules. These are normally delivered over 2 days.
  • 2 x 3 hour modules:First Aid and Protecting and Safeguarding Children, 1 day.
  • Practical coaching assessment

England & Wales Cricket Board ECB Coach (UKCC 2):

Date: 4th,11th,18th,25th January 09 and 1st February 09
Time: 10.00am - 5.00pm
Venue: West Hill High School, Thompson Cross, Stalybridge, SK15 1LX
Cost: £220

The role of the ECB Coach Award (UKCC 2) holder is to be able to “prepare for, deliver and review coaching sessions”. This course (24 hours + supported coaching of 10 sessions of at least 30 minutes in length + assessment) will help you t be able to:

  • Introduce and develop the game of cricket to people of all ages in an enjoyable way
  • Develop Fundamental MOVEMENT SKILLS
  • Develop and improve players (as people as well as cricketers) particularly at Fundamental and Learning to

Train stages of the LTAD model

  • Develop your coaching skills knowledge and qualities

The target audience for this course is people with previous experience of playing / coaching cricket. You are not required to hold an ECB Level 1 certificate prior to attending this course.
