Councillor S Smith's Annual Report
Councillor Stephen Smith
Ward: St Peter's
Annual Report of Activities 2007/08
Participation at Meetings and Panels
I continue to attend Full Council meetings and District Assemblies on a regular basis. It would be good to see more people attend the DA’s. They are a great opportunity for the public to get involved with what’s happening at a local level. The Technical, Economic and Environmental Services Scrutiny Panel of which I am an active member, continues doing a sterling job. One of our most recent areas of scrutiny has been the energy efficiency of TAC and other Council owned buildings. A very topical and highly important issue at this moment in time.
Members’ Advice Surgeries
Ashton Town Hall is still the venue for my monthly surgeries, first Monday in the month. I have continued to work closely with my constituents and have helped resolve many varied issues.
Training and Development
I have attended many training sessions which are provided by the Council. Keeping up to date with policies, developments, and raising awareness in general is an important aspect of being a Councillor.
Achievements during the Year
Anyone who walks around the St. Peter’s Ward must be aware of the general cleanliness, vibrancy and growth in the area. We have lots of new developments, both business and residential helping boost the appearance and local economy.
Oxford Park and its community sports centre goes from strength to strength and gained a Green Flag. Massive landscaping work is being carried out in West End Park and also in the adjoining church grounds. This park will be a lovely, laid back place for a quiet family day relaxation when it is completed. As a Ward Councillor I continue to work alongside my Ward colleagues and officers to improve all the other parks and areas in my Ward.
The independent living skills course that I founded three years ago is also growing and the biggest news is that all future courses will now be accredited which is fantastic for everyone completing the course.
I am also still hoping to get to the stage where we have a recognised youth forum – perhaps similar to our present DA’s. SPY (St. Peter’s Youth) are helping to develop this.
Last but not least, my wife Betty and myself have been privileged to have been Deputy Mayor and Mayoress over the last twelve months. We’ve met many fantastic people on our engagements and it really has been a tremendous honour to have held this position and represent Tameside Council as their ambassadors. Let’s see what the next twelve months bring!
