Originally the site of the Haughton Dale Wireworks, the area is now a peaceful haven of woodland, grassland and riverbank.

The car park is a level, compacted stone surface. Other than a stile suitable for prams and wheelchairs at the entrance to the woodland there are no other barriers along the route. A short route around the Lupin Field and woodland is approximately 700 metres in length and the paths throughout the site are level and of compacted stone. A longer route continues through to Gibraltar Bridge where there are another two accessible stiles. This route involves two 40 metre gradients of 1:8. The paths are of compacted stone and there are picnic tables at regular intervals along the route.
