Green Flag Award

Green Flag Award

Green Flag Award LogoThe Green Flag Award is the national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales. The Green Flag Award scheme was launched in 1996 and gave its first awards in 1997. Twelve years later, the scheme continues to provide the benchmark against which our parks and green spaces are measured.

In 2007, Tameside was delighted to be awarded 8 Green Flag Awards.  This year, we secured a further two more Green Flags, our total now standing at 10 for the first time.  This is something to celebrate, especially when you consider that all flags have to be reapplied for each year and therefore could be lost.

This year's Green Flag winners are:

Victoria Park has also been recognised by the Trust by being awarded the Green Heritage Award for its outstanding contribution to the area.

In Tameside, the parks are managed by either the Countryside Service or District Assemblies, while the cemetery is managed by Bereavement Services.

Cabinet Deputy, Cllr Jim Fitzpatrick said: "Our continued Green Flag success proves that Tameside's green spaces are the equal of any in the country".

"It's a ringing endorsement of all the work done by our staff who work tirelessly to ensure the borough's green open spaces are always a pleasant and attractive place to visit".

"I would also like to congratulate our community groups whose brilliant efforts earned five Green Pennants. This clearly highlights the dedication and neighbourly spirit that makes Tameside such a great place to live".
