These 12 walks have been designed to help you get and stay fit by enjoying short easy walks in the local countryside. Follow the link to see details of 12 short enjoyable walks.
Guided
Tameside health walks are a series of short, guided walks aimed at promoting a healthier lifestyle for older people as well as being suitable for people of varying abilities. The weekly walks are between one and three miles long, which can be taken at your own pace and are ideal for people who are not used to taking regular exercise. Each walk will be lead by a qualified walk leader.

What are the benefits of Walking?
Walking is a great activity and an easy way for people to take their recommended daily amount of physical activity. Any amount of physical activity is good for you, but the recommended weekly amounts for adults are five lots of 30 minutes moderate intensity activity on five or more days of the week.
Brisk walking is the perfect activity and has real benefits as it can:-
- Reduce coronary heart disease.
- Reduce the risk of strokes.
- Prevent developing diabetes.
- Prevent developing obesity
- Prevent development of osteoarthritis and osteoporosis.
- Provides you with more energy to do the things you enjoy in life.

Countryside Trails
6 easy to follow trails in the glorious countryside in Tameside from 2 miles to 10 miles. These leaflets can be purchased on-line.
Tameside Trail
A 65km (40 mile) circular walk, broadly following the Borough boundary, through varied and attractive countryside, linking together the several river valleys and country parks, as well as many other areas of interest. A route guide to the walk is available from Countryside visitor centres and the tourist information centre in Ashton-under-Lyne.
The route crosses or links with a number of other trails. It is well served by public transport, enabling the walk to be split into easy stages. This booklet can be purchased on-line.
Tame Valley Way
A fascinating 40km (25 mile) walk from end to end of the valley from the Pennines to the centre of Stockport. A route guide is available from the Visitor Centres and Tourist Information Centre and can be purchased on-line.
Etherow Goyt Valley Way
A 20km (12 mile) walk linking Vernon Park in Stockport with Longdendale and the Longdendale Trail. A beautiful and interesting route, passing through Etherow Country Park at Compstall and the Broad Mills heritage area. Good views. A guide booklet is available from visitor centres and can be purchased on-line.
Pennine Bridleway
This National Trail from the Peak District to North Yorkshire and beyond is at the development stage. The section in Tameside from Ogden Brook to Greenfield is open. See the Countryside Agency website www.thepenninebridleway.co.uk

Trans Pennine Trail
This long distance trail for cyclists, walkers and for some of the way, horseriders, runs from Hull to Liverpool. In Tameside it runs from Broadbottom to the Apethorn Godley rail path, then through the Tameside Valley to Reddish Vale. A walkers' alternative route runs across Werneth Low.
