Longer Walk : 4 KM (2 miles)

If walking in the countryside is new to you, to get the best out of this walk why not go with your partner or a friend?

Walk Summary

A figure of eight walk, which can be shortened by just doing the first loop. The first part of the walk includes one short climb from the canal and an easy gradient towards the end. The second part of the walk includes a more gradual climb from the Tame Valley. Mostly on good paths, but with part on grassy field paths on the first loop. There are one or two stiles on the first part of the walk. Occasional seats and picnic tables.

Landscape

Canal side walking, followed by woods and meadows in the Tame Valley where it first starts to open out after leaving Ashton under Lyne. Although industry and housing areas are nearby, the walk is surprisingly countryfied.

Directions

  1. If arriving by bus : leave the main Dukinfield Road (A627) along Dunkirk Lane beside Newton Hall, continuing to the bridge over the Peak Forest Canal. Go to the right, and through the kissing gate on to the towpath. Turn left (with the canal on your right). If arriving by car : leave the car park by the short flight of steps leading up to the Peak Forest Canal. Turn left.
  2. Follow the canal for about 500 metres to two steps and a stile in the fence on the left. Go over this, through a belt of trees, up steps to a second stile.
  3. Follow the path down, past the right side of a pond, to a further stile, and down a long flight of steps (seat at the top) through another belt of trees to picnic tables beside the River Tame.
  4. Follow the path left, go over a stile into a field, and keep along the right hand edge, alongside the river. At the far end further stiles lead through a small copse on to a wide track near a bridge. For the shorter walk, turn left alongside the river, and in 200 metres left, on a wide track leading to the buildings of Dunkirk Farm. Go to point 10 on the route directions for the return to the car park and buses for the longer walk continue with the directions from point 5.
  5. Go right across the river and immediately right by a squeeze stile on to a path through the trees, parallel to the river.
  6. In 200 metres turn left up some steps and over a narrow neck of land back to the river. Turn left, following the path which soon climbs gradually through the trees away from the river. At the top you reach a large grassy area, by a seat.
  7. ollow the path across the grass, forking left in 200 metres, and forward with the wide path parallel to the backs of houses.
  8. In 300 metres the path runs between houses (right) and a hedged field (left). In a further 150 metres branch left, following the line of the hedge on your left, soon descending to river level and the bridge over the River Tame met earlier in the walk.
  9. Cross the bridge, and in a further 200 metres turn left, away from the river on a wide track. (Note that there is a seat a little further on just beyond the point where you turn away from the river). The path leads through a gate to the buildings of Dunkirk Farm.
  10. For the car park : go up the path on the left as the buildings are reached. For the bus : continue along the lane to the canal bridge used on the outward journey, and back along the road to Newton Hall and the main Dukinfield Road.
