Walk Summary
A circuit of the country park. Most of the walk is on tarmac paths, except for a short section midway which is on easy grass. There are gentle ascents, and plenty of seats and picnic tables. For those able to manage it there is an optional detour to the monument at the highest point in the country park.
Landscape
The country park is an attractive mixture of woodland and open grassland on a hill giving wide views over the surrounding countryside.
How to get to the start
By car - The start is the car park at the entrance to the country park on Tandle Hill Road, which leaves the A671 Rochdale Road 1 kilometre (half a mile) north of Royton. The country park is signposted from the main road.
By bus - Buses between Oldham, Royton and Rochdale stop at the end of Tandle Hill Road. The walk along the wide, tree-lined suburban road will add a kilometre in all (half a mile) to the walk.

Directions
- From the car park go forward into the country park and take the tarmac path going straight ahead, with the children's play area on your right.
- The path goes downhill across open grass.
- At the fork keep ahead, enter the wood near an information shelter, and go over a small stream. Follow the main path rightwards, climbing gradually for some 300 metres.
- At the junction at the top the walk goes left. Detour : If you feel able to climb to the war memorial go right at the junction and then sharp left following a stone path to the war memorial. There are seats at the top and a view indicator. With the memorial on your left and the view indicator on your right, go forward to find a long flight of steps descending to the junction of paths at the start of Point 4. Go right on the tarmac path.
- Follow the path, still rising slightly before it levels out.
- You reach the edge of the wood, with a wide view opening up to Oldham, the southern hills of the Peak District, Manchester City Centre, Cheshire and the Chew Brook Valley (prominent in the Pennines to the left of Oldham town centre.) Follow the path downhill.
- Towards the bottom you reach a junction of paths with a picnic table 20 metres to the right. Go left : a signpost points along the Oldham Way. Cross easy grass (no path to speak of but the way is obvious).
- Look out for a large stone 25 metres to the right of the 'path' and keep it over to your right. A proper path begins again.
- Enter the trees and follow the path as it curves left. It goes through a shallow valley across grass with tree belts to left and right.
- In 300 metres you reach the information shelter passed on the outward route. Turn right, and follow the path uphill at first, and back to the country park entrance and car park.
