Scanning Analysis Response Assessment
In 2005 an innovative way to tackle burglary reduction in Tameside was devised which improved partnership working whilst at the same time presenting an holistic approach to burglary reduction in the Borough.
Through the Greater Manchester Against Crime Forum (GMAC) it was agreed that a GMAC SARA would be approved which tackled high levels of burglary within hot spot areas of the Borough. Following extensive analysis of the problem by the GMAC Analyst from Greater Manchester Police, a pilot area was found in Dane Bank in Denton.
The main aim of the project was to reduce incidents of burglary within the target area whilst at the same time reducing the public perception of the fear of crime in their areas which is a high priority for the Community Safety Team and the Local Authority. The Project also aimed to:-
- To increase awareness of the work of the Crime and Disorder Partnership and what they are doing to address the issues within this area;
- To promote increased uniformed presence (Police/Patrollers and PCSO's) to reduce crime and the fear of crime;
- To reduce the incidents of households becoming repeat victims of burglary and distraction burglary;
- To build community and voluntary capacity for crime prevention;
- To encourage individual households to effect security improvements;
- To render the area less attractive for offenders to commit crime;
The project included providing target hardening products such as light timers and window shock alarms, publicity material highlighting how home owners could make their homes safer, the erection of CCTV in the area and extensive publicity campaigns through the local press and radio stations.
The following links show the analysis of the project completed by the Greater Manchester Police Analyst as well as an example of the publicity erected in the vicinity.

To ensure that the project tackled the Council's priority of reducing the Fear of Crime a survey was undertaken not only to ensure that this priority had been met but also to ascertain the views of the recipients of the project so that if it was repeated in a different area the initiative addressed what the public actually wanted.
A copy of the report can be viewed here.
Since the project was completed in Dane Bank a further two hot spot areas have been tackled using similar methods. The report in relation to one of those in relation to public perception can be assessed here.

Given that these projects have an impact on crime statistics and an even greater impact on the fear of crime it is envisaged that the Community Safety Team in conjunction with the Burglary Reduction Group will continue to run these initiatives in hot spot areas for Burglary in Tameside.
