What is it?

The Tameside Curry Chef Competition is open to all food business within the Borough to compete for the title of 'Best Restaurant' and ‘Best Takeaway’. Organised by the Environmental Health Department the competition is a fantastic opportunity for chefs and businesses to showcase their skills and signature dishes. 

Now in it's sixth year the competition is back. This year we have been overwhelmed with the response from local traders to enter and after short listing to the final six we are pleased to announce the following businesses will be competing in the final:

6 Short listed - Best Takeaway:

  • Raja's Balit Bar, 17 Market Street, Stalybridge
  • Bollywood, 61 Market Street, Droylsden
  • British Raj, 36 Market Street, Stalybridge
  • Blue Crown, 25 Ashton Road, Denton
  • Mossley Tandoori, 167 Manchester Road, Mossley

6 Short listed- Best Restaurant

  • Topaz, 216- 218 Katherine Street, Ashton Under Lyne
  • Ashiana, 19 Ashton Road, Denton
  • Stamford Arms, 815 Huddersfield Road, Stalybridge
  • The Oddfellows Arms, 1-7 Alderley Street, Ashton Under Lyne
  • Red Rose Restaurant, 149 Manchester Road, Mossley
  • Portland Bistro, Portland Place, Ashton Under Lyne

When is the competition?

The competition will take place on Tuesday 30th June 2009 at Tameside College Link to External Website. All six finalists will be invited to prepare and cook a starter and main course for 4 people under the watchful eye of Tameside Environmental Health Officers, Trading standard officer, The Primary Care Trust and Tameside College chefs. All competitors need to demonstrate they can contribute to; Healthy Eating and lifestyles, Alternative diets, Improving skills and training within the catering sector.

Only one business from each category will be crowned the winner with a runner up and 4 finalists. All will receive trophies and certificates and the winners will also receive a banner to display outside their premises with their new title. The winners of the competition will be invited to The Food and Drink Festival later in the year where they will be re-awarded with their trophies.
