Item 5: YOUthink Intervention and Prevention Team

Alison Dransfield gave a presentation on YOUthink, Intervention and Prevention Team

  • YOUthink were established in 1994 and work closely with PCT, opening more clinics for young men and also setting up clinics in Colleges
  • Working within 11 schools across Tameside (including PRU, RC schools and Schools working with young people with disabilities)
  • YOUthink have good positive relationships with school nurses
  • More males prepared to attend sexual health clinics
  • Teenage pregnancy levels are high and are increasing
  • Tameside levels of pregnancy are much higher than the levels for all of England, and also higher when compared to the North West
  • YOUthink have adapted a three tier approach:
    • Tier 1 – Referral from agency or self referral.
    • Tier 2 – Group Work.
    • Tier 3 – Joint working and promotional work
  • Catholic schools are not willing to allow YOUthink to work within their schools
  • As pregnancy levels are increasing at the year 7 age range, suggestions were made to target students at a younger age, doing visits to primary schools. This is something which YOUthink want to adapt, however they are not permitted to visit primary schools and funding would also be a limitation.
  • YOUthink have set a target to screen 1000 young people in Tameside, this year

Item 6: Sports development update

Steve Atkinson and Rob Skeldon gave an update on sports development.

  • Increase sessions on Saturdays. ‘Active Families’ has been successful. They had 11 fathers and 11 sons taking part in a Fathers and Sons project
  • Want to make schools more of a public access point, opening during the evenings or at weekends as they have such great facilities and big play areas which could be utilised to great efficiency to engage young people in sports and physical activities.
  • There is a problem in engaging girls in sports from the age of 14 upwards.
  • The participation in sports tends to decrease as young people leave school. Targeted support is required to prevent young people this drop off in participation.
  • Sports Development want to bring boxing clubs into Medlock, as they feel there is a need for it.
  • They would also like to have more coaching / leadership courses available, or go into schools and teach leader courses.
  • There is a problem with young people on bowling greens. This is being improved through Funky Family Bowling, which is an activity where young people can bowl with older people. This enables a gradual builds up of good relations between young people and old people, which in the past has caused not been as good as is desired.
  • Costs of clubs causes a problem for some families, as they can’t afford to pay for their children to attend. Community passes have been made available to give to some families which have this problem, and also, some clubs are funded so they are free.
  • Need to be able to engage with the young people. There is a need to get more people who can engage in all aspects. Who can attend meetings, make decisions and then follow up what has been planned with the young people.

Item 7: Youth on Line survey plus discussion/template

Tim Grahamslaw (Student Placement) presented to results of the Youth Online, comparing results from Denton Droylsden and Audenshaw to the borough as a whole.

  • The presentation focused mainly on the negative aspects of the results in order to see which areas need most support.
  • Some questions were asked regarding the bullying section, as it just states whether young people think that bullying is a problem, or whether they had been involved in bullying personally. It doesn’t ask the question as to where the bullying is taking place. As the results may lead people to believe that this is just referring to bullying in schools, where as it was suggested bullying is more used via mobile phones, or through the internet, rather than in schools.

Item 8: Early Intervention and Prevention Teams: Consultation update

The meeting received feedback from members who had attended the recent consultation events on the future of integrated early intervention teams. There was a general view that the morning sessions were informative and helpful but that the design of the ‘dream team’ (in the afternoon) lacked clarity. Those who attended were unsure what the final shape of the ‘team’ would be and some uncertainty about the arrangements for composition/secondments of staff members.
