Item 1: Welcome

Claire welcomed everyone to the meeting and introductions were made.

Item 2: Apologies

Item 3: Minutes from the last meeting and matters arising

Item 4 – updated Report Cards to be requested from Pat Jennings

Minutes accepted as a true record.

Item 4: Youth Online Survey

  • Tameside commissioned a survey aimed at Year 10 pupils (Brahms) – results to be circulated electronically to group members
  • The survey was anonymous and undertaken in IT lessons
  • Lots of good news came out of the survey
    • Young People hate litter
    • A large percentage aspired to move out of Tameside
    • Positive outlook on life – have good friends
  •  Drink is a problem
    • unprotected sex an issue whilst drunk

The information gathered from the YOL survey is to be used in the following ways.

  1. A presentation/publicity is to be put together and being widely used to show the positive messages that have come out of the survey
  2. An Action Plan around the troubling areas

Item 5: Every Child Matters reporting structure for report cards - Claire

Following on from the last meeting –

  • 3 groups looked at the three headlines
  • We looked at the indicators.
    • Julie has now drawn up a diagram to show which group members would lead on which areas.
    • Julie mapping “Here by rights” – we are doing good work. The problem appears to be capacity
  • Claire suggested that this may be due to us not seeing this as part of our core business

Julie said she felt that this should be part of our induction process

  • Wellbeing indicators being developed
  • Transition – seen as Key change/challenge in young peoples lives
  • Gaps in geography and equality

Claire and Julie to do more work on this.

Julie to do a report card on democracy – contact Julie if you feel you can contribute.

Item 6: Review of the CYPP – Julie

Julie feedback to the group

  • Very encouraging response from this group
  • Main points

A discussion took place surrounding the review.

Lorraine – Think Family (parental early intervention project). Young people working with parents.

Greater Manchester challenge – building a parents panel/work around transition

Item 7: Review of the theme groups - update

Claire updated the group.

Membership has been amended
The presentation is delayed

Item 8: Participation Network – Update – Tina

4 main areas and 4 subgroups
Hoping to pull together a “1 stop shop” to go on SID

Julie is undertaking a review of participation – putting together an Action Plan

Looking at making it “Young People” friendly
Looking at developing timetable for consultation process to be more effective.

Item 9: Teenage Pregnancy Dashboard presentation

Paula Henson (Senior Strategy Manager for Teen Pregnancy Service) gave an informative verbal presentation with regards to Teenage Pregnancy to the group.

  • There has been a national strategy in place for the past 10 years.
  • We have lots of good practices in Tameside, but no improvement in our teen pregnancy record
  • Data takes 14 months to be published
  • Small percentage of our population are teen pregnancies
  • Majority of post 16 pregnancies are attending college.
  • Tameside higher than North West and England
  • Encouraged to promote “fit & forget” methods of contraception – must also promote C-card scheme to avoid STI’s
  • Working with the six highlighted schools – peer mentors to go into the schools with respect to Teen Pregnancies. Teens and Tots groups. The work is targeted at those pupils who are seen as being at risk of becoming teen parents – working on self esteem and aspirations.
  • Support schools to target those young people at risk – encouraging schools to use the personalisation plans.
  • Identifying issues in certain schools
  • Health mentors working with young women who have had a termination to prevent further pregnancies
  • Need to look at what schools are doing right and learn from them.
