Anne informed the group that there was report on Blackpool Children’s Centres.

Item 6:Senior Schools Rep: Robin Elms – Dale Grove School is interested – the dates of the meetings have been sent out to him and Tracy is awaiting contact from him.

Item 4: Children’s Nursing Team Presentation

Jackie Leonard gave an informative and enjoyable presentation outlining the work the Community Pediatric Nursing Team.
Main points:

  • The team consists of 12 trained Pediatric nurses who care for children in their own homes, nurseries, relative’s homes.
  • They are hospital based/part of the acute service.
  • Their main priorities are to:
    •  Reduce the length of stay in hospital
    •  Reduce the need for hospital admission
  •  Some of the conditions are:
    • Asthma
    • Eczema
    • Changing dressings
    • Constipation
    • Children with complex needs – along with complex needs team
    • End of life service at home – parents given 24 hour phone number
  • They work 365 days a year from 8.00am – 6.00pm
  • Referrals come from various sources e.g. GP’s (certain conditions), A&E department, Observation & Assessment Units, Tertiary Centres, Allied Health Professionals.
  • The Community Children’s nurses are independent of the District Nursing Service, but they do work alongside them on certain Pediatric cases. The District Nursing Service is now concentrating its services on adult.

It was suggested that the Family Information Service could publicise the Children’s Nursing Service. Although at the moment the service does not accept self-referrals, members of the group felt that in bringing the service to the attention of parents this would promote more GP referrals to the service.

Item 5: Children’s Centre Information

Anne Gave an informative and interesting verbal presentation to the group regarding Children’s Centres.
Giving details of:

  • What Children’s Centres are
  • Where they are based
  • What is on offer/services
  • Links to other services and how these links are used
  • Details of the structure of the Children’s Centres and management structure
  • How to access the Children’s Centre services
  • Partners
  • Future developments
  • How some of the projects and initiatives that had taken place and were being further developed
  • A consultation process with residents on the edge of Audenshaw to see what services would be useful to their families. Once this consultation is completed there will be key decisions to be made as to where a Children’s Centre would be best placed.

Item 6: Family Information Service

Sue Jones gave a presentation in relation to the service provided by the Family Information Service, which was both interesting and informative.

  • Background to change of service provided (section 12 Children’s Act 2006)
  • Families can access services through just one service
  • Good partnerships with a good knowledge of “what’s available”
  • Universal service not criteria based
  • Telephone help line
  • Information/assistance for children moving on from primary to secondary schools to ensure they meet the application deadlines.

Item 7 : Area Profiles – Update

Tracy and Lindsay gave an update of the Area Profiles.
The Area profiles have information that is common to all areas and also Key Performance Indicators in the five areas of Achieve Economic Wellbeing, Enjoy and Achieve, Be Healthy, Positive Contributions . Lindsay has started to add the data to these areas. The Council has purchased new software from which we will be able to pull this information and produced statistical information in graph form which can then be imported into the profiles. This software should be up and running in December therefore it has been decided to put the Area Profiles on hold until this time. Once we are able to access the software Lindsay will then import the information. We expect this to be completed in early 2009.

Item 8: Common Processes

Jane-Ann gave an insight into her new role as CAF Advisor.

  • CAF training statistics show that between two and three hundred practitioners had undertaken the CAF training – which equates to approx, 80% of staff have had the training.
  • Now need to focus on the 20% who had not undertaken CAF training
  • Need to check with managers which of their staff have had the training – where there new staff who need to attend the training?
  • Need to look at the quality of CAFs produced
  • It is proposed that a memo will go out to anyone who may undertake a CAF stating that a copy should go to Jane-Ann
  • Feedback will go through the managers – to discuss with practitioners
  • Need to recruit CAF champions – preferably practitioners

Tracy commented that there is a need for CAF champions in the Children’s Centres and also in Health Centres

Common Processes Workshops – update  A list of the workshops was circulated to group members

  • These workshops are for staff who have already undertaken the CAF training

The launch of Contact Point has been put back – therefore it’s is deemed sensible to provide more JASPER training – please contact Andrea Reed to arrange
