Haughton Green Playing Fields

Haughton Green information pointHaughton Green Playing Fields is a multi purpose site that can be used by the whole community, by providing a sports cage, play area, full sized football pitches and a new bowling green. Other features include a wildlife area, a health walk, footpaths and landscaping, area’s that all members of the community can benefit from.

Regeneration of Haughton Green Playing Fields

The sports fields for many years was a rather bleak open space dogged with
vandalism and other anti social behaviour, surrounded by houses in the centre of a large estate it was nevertheless a valuable green site for the all the residents who were keen to see the site improved.

Haughton Green Community Forum in partnership with TMBC and Groundwork Tameside began to put together a plan for improving the playing fields based on the ideas and the needs of the local residents.

photo of Haughton Green This area underwent major refurbishment in 2004, following consultation with users of the playground.

The site of approximately 1.2ha, together with the adjacent football fields has been transformed from a bland open area with few facilities into a much valued and well-used community green space.

Green Pennant 

Haughton Green Playing Fields has received the Green Pennant Award from 2006. The Green Pennant is a national award that recognises high quality green spaces in England and Wales that are managed by voluntary and community groups. The Award has an impressive background - its part of the Green Flag Award scheme, the national standard for quality parks and green spaces.

Green Flag Award 

The Green Flag Award is the national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales. The Green Flag Award scheme was launched in 1996 and gave its first awards in 1997. Eleven years later, the scheme continues to provide the benchmark against which our parks and green spaces are measured.

Haughton Green Playing Fields received it’s first Green Flag Award in 2008, being recognised and rewarded for its level of excellence. Popular with the local community the park boasts a wildlife area, bowling green, Green Park Centre, Changing rooms, Under eight’s play area, over eight’s play area, multi use games area and a healthy walk pathway.

Events

Events are ongoing in the area, they have included bulb planting with local schools, community tree planting and celebration events. Haughton Green Playing Fields are also regularly visited by local football photo's of community eventsteams. There is also the following on the bowling greens:

  • Saturday 11.00am-12.30pm– Under 16’s
  • Tuesday 6.30pm-8.00pm– Open Age

Tuition by qualified coaches.

Why not come and support your local bowling teams?

  • Men’s Team competitions– Thursdays
  • Ladies Team competitions– Wednesdays
  • Matches on Alternative weeks.

  • Before & After School Club
  • Zodiac Morris Dancing
  • Irish Dancing
  • Ballroom Dancing
