The Change Is Underway…
On 16th June 2008 Tameside will introduce the facility to enable residents to set up a Direct Debit over the telephone for payment of Council Tax, and Business Rates.
The new process will provide residents with a more convenient way to set up a Direct Debit over the telephone without the need to complete a Direct Debit Instruction.
In addition to improving our service quality to our residents, it is also anticipated that the reduction in paper, postage and packaging will help Tameside to reduce administration costs.
Do not delay… from 16th June 2008 residents will be able to contact their area helpline telephone number on their Council Tax or Business Rates bill and begin to enjoy the benefits of paying by Direct Debit.

Existing Direct Debit Payers
A Change to Council Tax and Business Rates Direct Debit Originator Identification Number.
Please note that as from 15th July 2008 Tameside’s new Originator Identification number for the collection of Council Tax and Non-Domestic Rates will change from 852898 to 973790.
The good news is that you need take no action to continue receiving the benefits of Direct Debit. Please be assured this change will not affect your current Council Tax or Business Rates account, or the way in which we will collect Direct Debits. There is no need for you to set up a new Direct Debit, as details of the change will have been supplied to your bank who may also notify you, independently.
Additionally you may also see a comment on your bank statement advising you of the final payment under our old Originator identification number 852898, and first payment under our new Originator identification number 973790.
The Direct Debit Guarantee
- This Guarantee is offered by all Banks and Building Societies that take part in the Direct Debit Scheme.
The efficiency and security of the Scheme is monitored and protected by your own Bank or Building Society.
- If the amounts to be paid or the payment dates change Tameside MBC will notify you 10 working days in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed.
- If an error is made by Tameside MBC or your Bank or Building Society, you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund from your branch of the amount paid.
- You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by writing to your Bank or Building Society.
