What is the ‘Big Chat’?
The Big Chat is the yearly event which celebrates everything that is good for people with learning disabilities in Tameside. It provides an opportunity for people with learning disabilities and their carers to ask questions and talk to senior managers about the quality of the service we provide.
The 2008 event was held at Dukinfield Town Hall and for the first time Dukinfield Park. To reflect the outdoor aspect, the Shadow Partnership Board themed the event ‘Sunny Futures’ and over 500 people attended.
Who supports the ‘Big Chat’?
Big Chat is a large event organised by the Partnership Board, the Shadow Partnership Board and The Learning Disabilities User Involvement Team. These groups are made up of local councillors; health and social care professionals, leisure services, local community and voluntary organisations together with people with learning disabilties and their carers.
Why the ‘Big Chat’?
The Government has a ‘white paper’ called Valuing People Now.
The aim of the policy is to help adults with learning disabilities and their carers, think about:
- Having more choice and control over their lives and services (Personalisation).
- What people do in the days and evenings – including getting a paid job?
- Leading healthy lives by eating well and keeping fit.
- Making sure they are getting a good service from the NHS
and other health services.
- People having more choices about where they live.
One Voice
The Partnership Board has an annual newsletter called One Voice. It has items written by Service Users about their success stories.
