All councils are required to produce a Disability Equality Scheme under the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 2005. The DDA 2005 extends the 1995 Act to include an active duty to promote disability equality. Under the duty public authorities are required to have due regard to the need to:
- Promote equality of opportunity between disabled people and others
- Eliminate unlawful discrimination
- Eliminate harassment of disabled people that is related to their disability
- Promote positive attitudes towards disabled people, even where that involves treating disabled people more favourably than others.
The purpose of the Disability Equality Scheme is to set out the Council's approach to planning and delivering disability equality, and to evaluating progress towards the objectives set out in the Disability Equality Scheme Action Plan.
