Counselling Service for People Affected by Sight Loss

Find out How it can Help You

Image of two People Talking at a TableLiving with sight problems can be difficult. Often, people with sight problems experience feelings of loneliness, anxiety and isolation and it is not always easy to talk to family and friends.

Parents and carers of people with a visual impairment may also feel that they need someone to talk to.

Tameside Social Care and Health, Visual Impairment Service provides a confidential counselling service to enable people affected by sight loss to discuss their feelings and explore options within a safe environment.

How to find out about the Counselling Service?

You can contact the Visual Impairment Team and ask to be referred for counselling. You will be contacted by a worker who will make an appointment with you. They will discuss with you whether counselling is the best option.

What happens next?

If it is agreed that counselling may help you, your details will then be passed on to a counsellor who will contact you. Initially you will be offered six sessions.

How Counselling can help

Counselling can help you to:

  • talk through your difficulties;
  • explore your feelings in a free and open way;
  • increase your confidence and self-esteem;
  • explore ways of resolving difficulties.

Is there a charge?

No. The service is free.

Are the Counsellors qualified?

All the counsellors have a certificate in counselling skills (one year's training) and are working towards a Diploma in counselling or are Diploma qualified.

All counsellors abide by The British Association of Counsellors code of practice and ethics and receive regular supervision.

Can transport to the Centre be arranged?

If you experience difficulty in getting to your counselling session, we can discuss transport options.
