District Assemblies

There are 8 District Assemblies covering the whole of the Tameside area, and they have been in operation since 1998.

Each Assembly is responsible for:- Street Cleaning, Minor Roadworks, Road Safety, Parks and Grass Cutting. They also work in conjunction with the Youth Service, Police and Outside Agencies to help tackle local crime and safety issues and to boost the local economy.

District Assembly meetings are held regularly throughout the year, and offer the opportunity for people to air their views/concerns regarding local issues.

Representatives of Greater Manchester Police and Fire and Rescue Service also regularly attend meetings to give an update on local issues and answer questions relating to Community Safety.

Outside Agencies frequently attend meetings to give presentations/information on schemes/developments particular to each District Assembly area.

The Advisory Group

Each District Assembly has its own Advisory Group, comprising of local representatives who are there to express their views on local issues, thus helping Councillors make decisions.

The Advisory Groups are made up of representatives from the business community, voluntary organisations and tenants and residents associations. There are also pupils from each secondary school in the Assembly area to ensure the voice of young people is heard. All appointments to the Advisory Group are ratified by Councillors at a full meeting of the Council.

Being An Advisory Group Member

Representatives must be from groups or businesses within the District Assembly Area. Advisory Group Members are appointed every two years and application forms can be obtained by contacting the Democratic Services Unit.

As an Advisory Group Member, you would be required to:-

  • Consult with similar organisations/businesses in your District Assembly Area about issues for discussion and report back to them, so that the assembly receives the widest information and advice possible.
  • Receive support from the Council's experienced team of Democratic Services Officers and the Assistant Executive Director (District Assemblies)
  • Attend all or most of the Assembly meetings.

Advisory Group Members give their time voluntarily, therefore you will not be paid for your time.

Forms can be downloaded in PDF Format: Download the District Assemblies Advisory Group Application Form 127.36 KB PDF File.

The closing date for application forms to be returned is Friday 7th May 2010.
