Greater Manchester Ecology Unit
Ecological Searches
The Ecology Unit holds a number of data sets with ecological information. These include:
- The Register of Sites of Biological Importance
- Local Nature Reserves
- Protected Species Information
- UK BAP Species Information
Protected Species Information
We hold information on the following protected species:
- Great crested newt
- Water voles
- Badgers
We also hold limited information on:
- Bats
- Certain Schedule 1 birds
- Certain UK BAP Species (e.g. Brown Hare)
Search requests can be submitted either by the form below, in writing to the Ecology Unit or via email. Please include as much information as possible to enable us to deal with requests quickly. The form indicates the level of detail required.

Charges
An administrative charge is likely to be levied for any search undertaken. Our current search fees are:
- Search costs: £100 for the first hour + £50 per /hr for each additional or part hour
- SBI citation sheets: £30/site
We do not charge landowners and occupiers for SBI information on their own land.
