Welcome to Tameside Council's Economic Development Unit, playing a key role in delivering the aims of the 'Prosperous Society' theme of the Community Strategy through the promotion of significant development opportunities throughout the Borough. By attracting major investment, making the Borough more competitive and attractive for investment we aim to promote economic development creating new and high quality employment opportunities. The Council's role is to facilitate investments focusing on projects in receipt of public sector and on encouraging private sector commercial development through effective marketing and property advice.
The Unit is also working in partnership to increase the quality and variety of work skills offered by Tameside residents, helping them to make the most of new employment and training opportunities as they are created.
We offer a comprehensive range of client support services in the areas of economic development and inward investment, providing up to date information on local, national and international initiatives impacting on the local community and the local economy.
The key partnership for the activity of the Unit is the Tameside Economic and Learning Partnership (TELP) which is a thematic partnership of the Tameside Strategic Partnership 
Community and voluntary sector organisations may wish to also seek grant funding and support from Tameside Third Sector Coalition (T3SC).

The Tameside Business Support team aim to develop and support social enterprise within Tameside. The team will work in partnership with the individual or group to develop and support new and existing social enterprises ensuring their sustainability.
What is Social Enterprise?
A social enterprise is defined as having one or more of the following characteristics:-
- Social ownership i.e. the business is owned by the employees with all decisions being made by the employees.
- Trading with a social purpose i.e. with a view to supporting the community in terms of offering employment opportunities and providing locally based services.
- Trading in the market for sustainability.
A social enterprise also has clearly defined social aims which include:-
- The creation of employment and access to work for disadvantaged groups.
- Providing locally based services.
- Providing training and personal development opportunities.
What advice is available?
The following start-up process will take place:-
- An initial discussion will take place where the business idea is discussed to establish if this best fits with the aims of the project.
- A package of support to meet the needs of the enterprise or individual will be developed in partnership with other agencies.
